Seminars generally run 1 1/2 - 2 hours but can be expanded to a 3 hour format. Several seminars can be combined for a full day program.
Tapestry - A Personal View
I am often asked to talk about how I got started in weaving, how I got from "there" to "here". I'll share some personal experiences and decisions that took me out of the "business world" and into the world of weaving...as a business!! I'll talk about reality of setting up a business, the commission process, pricing my work, selling and exhibiting and some funny stories of things that happened along the way as you view some of my commission pieces. And you'll even learn a little about my role as President of and Executive Producer for Victorian Video Productions.
Tapestry Tips & Techniques
This seminar is designed to answer your many questions about tapestry. The information will allow the beginning tapestry weaver to get started successfully, without having to reinvent the "tapestry wheel." And if you've already been reinventing the wheel, you'll find many helpful hints and refinements. This program is designed to answer the who, when, where, and why of tapestry weaving. It offers solutions to technical problems, and includes valuable information on warp/weft relationship, weaving tips, up and down warp threads, how to weave a "round" circle and vertical curves, plus finishing and mounting ideas. So bring all your questions and join in!
Teaching Tips & Techniques
The success of a workshop/lecture/seminar requires a thorough knowledge of subject matter plus a lot of organization and planning. I spent 9 years with IBM as an Education Development Analyst and learned many valuable teaching techniques which I'll be sharing with you. We'll begin with a discussion about planning and organizing a lecture and a seminar type format. Then we'll talk about the value of a topical outline, creating effective visual aids and handouts, successful teaching techniques, and how to make sure you have enough material, but not too much. If you're thinking of teaching, want to refine your current seminars, or learn to teach for that first time, the guidelines presented will make your preparation easier and your programs more successful, enjoyable and valuable.
Marketing Your Work
Whether you want to do commission work, exhibit in galleries, or sell you work on consignment or in craft shows, we'll go over many points that will help you run a successful and profitable home based business. I have exhibited and sold my tapestries on a commission and consignment basis since 1979. In 1985 I took the profits from my tapestry business and started another business Victorian Video Productions. In addition to sharing some personal experiences we'll focus on the how-to and why of record keeping, business card design, accounting practices, and the preparation of contracts and consignment agreements. Perhaps the toughest thing of all is pricing your work. We'll spend a lot of time on that and the other bigee...how to promote yourself and sell you work!
Tapestry Design for the Non-Artist
This seminar is designed for those of you who want to do tapestry but say to yourself , "I don't know how to draw". We'll take some ideas and use several techniques to develop them into cartoons for tapestry. You'll be surprised what you can come up with even if you think you can't draw! I share many designing techniques with you and invite you to bring your ideas along for discussion.
Tapestry - Shading & Blending Techniques
Creating color transitions from one color area to another is the topic of this seminar. There are several ways to do this. We'll talk about the use hatching and hachures, how to create vertical & horizontal shading and how to work with multiple strands of weft to further enhance hatching, hachure and floating bar techniques. After the technical discussion we'll view a variety of tapestries (via slides) and discuss how various effects were created by different tapestry artists using a variety of techniques. A basic understanding of tapestry is helpful.
Tapestry Techniques for Rug Weaving - Master the Interlock
Tapestry techniques are used by many cultures to create beautiful rugs. However, there are many choices and sometimes we get into trouble because we aren't consistent. This problem solving clinic will point out many differences. Should you have the wefts travel in the same or opposite direction? Should you turn on an up or down warp thread. Should you use weft or warp interlock? What's the best solution each situation. You'll be surprised by the variety of ways you can perform a simple interlocking technique. Once you learn these differences you'll be in control of the situation and able to achieve consistent results time after time!
Tapestry Techniques for Clothing
Some tapestry techniques lend them self perfectly to fabric weaving. After more than 20 years of doing tapestries on a commission basis, I decided to explore the use of tapestry techniques in fabric for clothing. The resulting fabric is not weft faced, and has a wonderful hand. The flexibility of tapestry techniques like hatching and hachures allow you to work spontaneously or follow a preplanned design. After a discussion of how to weave hatching and hachures we will take a commercial vest or jacket pattern pattern discuss how to turn it into a garment cartoon. The weaving is quick and easy. It only took me 6 hours to weave enough fabric for a vest...it's all in the planning and that's what we'll do!
